The first European explorer to arrive in Florida is said to have been Ponce de Leon, after getting lost at sea during a storm.
It is also said that he was in search of the Fountain of Youth and when he reached the coast of Florida, in the place where today stands St. Augustine, he found the Timucua, ancient people originating in this region, living in a village around a spring of fresh water.
To his surprise, many of the natives lived well and were of advanced age. Had he, in a ‘stroke of luck’, found the much sought-after fountain of youth?!
And you can sample a little bit of that water at Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth Archeological Park, the perfect place to discover more about Florida’s Spanish roots. What about?
