Bal Harbor’s world-class resorts attract a steady stream of sophisticated guests. Regarded (along with Miami Beach) as the “Riviera of America”, it proves to be a magnet for the best musicians and artists of the 1950s. Count Basie and Guy Lombardo could be seen drinking in Ivanhoe’s Pump Room Lounge. Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack frequented Americana’s Carnival Supper Club. Bal Harbor hotels have quickly become the destination of choice for countless dignitaries, celebrities and presidents.
In 1957 famed real estate developer Stanley Whitman purchased 16 acres (originally planned for a gas station and grocery store), with the plan to create a luxury outdoor mall.
In 1965 Bal Harbor Shops opens with 30 luxury shopkeepers. Whitman entices Stanley Marcus to open his first Neiman Marcus outside of Texas, with Saks Fifth Avenue and other high-end retailers following suit. Over time, the Bal Harbor Shops became the first shopping location for Cartier and Bulgari, and the first ventures outside of New York for Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Sergio Rossi.
As a thriving leisure, luxury, dining and cultural destination that sets the bar for Miami and South Florida communities, Bal Harbor Village continues its tradition of economic development and community betterment. It is the main shopping center in the Florida region, sought after for its luxury and originality!
