Fort Myers is a city located in the US state of Florida, in Lee County, of which it is headquartered. It was incorporated on March 24, 1886.
This city, together with Cape Coral, forms the Cape Coral-Fort Myers MSA (urbanized core area) of Lee County. The population for the metropolitan area was 593 136 in July 2008.
Fort Myers is the historic and governmental center of Lee County. It is the gateway to southwest Florida, which is the region with the highest number of tourists in the state. It is located 120 miles south of Tampa, where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Callsahatchee River. The winter homes of Thomas Alva Edison (Seminole Lodge) and Henry Ford (The Mangoes) are two of the main tourist attractions in the area and they are located on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers. The city is the current spring practice home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.
On August 13, 2003, Fort Myers was hit by Hurricane Charley, a Category 4 hurricane that made landfall in the north of the area. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma slammed into southern Naples, but in any case caused extensive damage to Fort Myers and its southern suburbs.
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is located southeast of the city in South Fort Myers, near Gateway and Lehigh Acres.
