America’s first National Wildlife Refuge is located near the Atlantic coastal community of Sebastian, Florida. A little island in the Indian River Lagoon, a dot on the map really, but with a very large international footprint. Pelican Island, and its surrounding 5400+ acres of protected waters and lands, are known as the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Very nice place to take a walk and enjoy nature. Parking lot and bathrooms when you drive up. There seem to be a couple of trails - we did the 2.5 mile loop trail right off the parking lot. Nice views, tranquil, and not very crowded.

We went to the butterfly garden and saw the tiny blue butterflies. The flowers were plentiful and all blooming all around.

Beautiful area to see wildlife! Loved seeing Spoonbills, Pelicans and the other birds. The trails were wide and easy to walk. Centennial trail is wheel chair accessible. It's very peaceful and quiet. Would recommend!

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was a fun stop. There are a few parking areas and several trails off the main trail. Offering easy, long or short walks. We were able to walk the Jungle Trail which is a sand road and it was a great way to see this refuge and the flora and fauna of the region. If you're in the area, it's worth it.
